Summary:

What kind of list are you intend to build?

When I started studying the topic of list building, I was very surprised seeing that how little was written about the topic.
Yeah, I mean useful and actionable stuff, which you do not have to give an arm and a leg for and then some.
If you search “list building” on Google, most of the search results on the first page are just squeeze pages or unrelated posts.
I suppose that to make those results actually relevant Google might have a lot of work ahead of them.
I faced a challenge and a wall.
I would like to share everything I know about list building and more. But, you know, it is very hard to find “more”.

Enough with the rant.

And so, in the spirit of list building topic, I wonder “hmm… how about creating the meanest, the biggest ever collection of list building tips….”
Just my first thought. At the end of the post, you will see what I have made of it.
Now, before I keep it on, I assume that you know that:
A. A list of responsive customers or subscribers like the glue that holds your business together and then helps you create multiple streams of income.
B. You need traffic for sure. The more traffic you have, the better for you to build a list. Don’t worry about that part, because you are here in the right place to learn more about gaining more targeted traffic to your site.
And, let’s get started with:

How to Build a List with 20 Killer Tips

So, what do I mean by Rich list builder, poor list builder?
In order to build a list, the amount of money you would like to cough up will put you into the former or the latter category.
In general, the more money you may invest in building your list, the more money you may make.
It is still be fine if you don’t have much money – you’ll get there but it might take a bit longer.

4 Elements to Build a List

1. Traffic – As I have said above, the more traffic, the better. I mean targeted and diverse ones, which are coming from different sources.
2. Lead Magnet – the freebie that you are intend to offer. These days the stakes are quite high, you should make it good.
3. Opt-in Form should be eye-catching, clear to the point, and the tricky part is everywhere but not intrusive.
4. Monetization – how do you plan on making money off your list with your own product, services, affiliate products, and more.

But you already knew that…

List Building for Rich Man

I need to confess that I am not very familiar with these methods.
That’s partially because I don’t believe that some of those really work. In addition, if I intend to invest money in something like this, I must make sure what I am doing, and that takes me time and more money, but not the one I am willing to give up right away.
Here’s what I know about these methods. Now, let me tell you:

1. Buy a List

I would never advise anyone to do this in any niche. As a result, you have a bunch of names and working email addresses. However, can you get them to stay with you and even to buy from you? Very hard, I need to say.

2. Buy Ezine Solo Ads

Ezine is a kind of online marketing term.
You can select to purchase an ad in a newsletter (also an ezine), which is sent out to thousands of subscribers.
However, what’s called a “solo ad” is the only ad worth considering.  Without any other content surrounding it, solo ad still goes out all on its own. We have a review about Directory of Ezines, which show people how to maximize the full potential benefits of using Ezine directory.

3. Banner Advertising

Have you ever heard of banner blindness? It’s still there.
I’ve never used this method, I must say.  So, I do not know what your ROI might be on this kind.

4. Google Adwords

You should never ventured out into that either.
It is still very much talked about the time of the famous “Google Slap”. To say in other word, Google made it unattractive for a small fish to try PPC. However, Google Adwords also provides other services and tools for SEO, such as their keyword tool.

5. Facebook Ads

This is what I plan to do.
It’s fairly easy to master, fairly inexpensive in the eyes of the beholder, and it brings results.
To teach myself on this subject, I purchased Facebook Ad Power course by Ryan Deiss. I would suggest buying this course, mastering its technique, and starting to use it while it is still such a good market. I also have an article, which layouts the key benefits of using Facebook and Twitter for SEO.
When you have money, there are many more ways for you to choose to build a list. But, it is neither my area of expertise nor interest, as I said.

Ok guys, let’s get down to the meaty part of this post:

List Building for Poor Man

What to do when you have no money, and no list, as well?

6. Product bonus

Find one who sells a product, which compliments your freebie. Then, approach them about giving your good bonus away with their product.
You know, everybody loves freebies. And of course, he or she will have links back to your blog.

7. Cross promotion

You can approach other bloggers with similar size blogs and hopefully lists in your niche, and agree to send an email about their newsletter to your list, if they do the same for you.

8. Stay above the fold

If possible, you had better keep your opt-in form visible and stay above the fold.

9. Give an incentive

Some time, I saw a post on the site SocialMouths giving away a social media or blog audit to a random subscriber to their list.
In return for a chance to win, their visitors are gently persuaded to subscribe to their list.
How brilliant was that!

10. Hold back

In this method, you should write a freebie with several steps, comes with brilliantly clever and useful tips every once in a while.

11. Create Your PDFs

You might have heard of this before, but have you ever used it?
This simple idea is to create e-books out of your existing content.
Firstly, make a PDF out of all the posts you have on kolibri bird feeding habits, together with full of links to your blog and also various posts on your blog.  Secondly, write the PDF in such a way that readers have to back to your blog for more information. By the way, you can check out my e-book, which is called The Ultimate Guide to SEO for Affiliates as an example for freebie in PDF format in my blog category. Then, send your PDF out to various PDF networks.
However, Should not just upload your PDF and waiting for it to be downloaded, but promote it and let people know it’s there.

12. Guest post

Guest posting is another way that I’m sure you’ve heard of before.
But, are you doing it though?
When you publish a useful guest post on some popular blogs, if the readers of that blog find your post helpful, they will likely check out your blog to find further information about the topics that they think you’re dedicated to. We also have a guest post policy at Business Review Center, which only accepts well-written posts in Internet Marketing topics from other bloggers.

13. JV Giveaways

JV giveaway is basically an event set up by several bloggers. They do that with the aim of building each other’s lists through leveraging their own lists, as well as social networks.
In this method, each participating member submits their freebies that lead to their squeeze pages. To attract as many opt-ins as possible, JVs agree to send emails to their lists, then, promote the event through their social networks.
With a good product, hundreds of new subscribers are likely to be their loyal readers per giveaway.
All the subscribers want is your freebie (bonus). However, we all know there is no free lunch, you give them your free bonus, in exchange, they do have the incentives to give you their names and emails.
If you are interested in joining in a JV Giveaway, you can take a look at a couple of sites here: jvgiveawayblog. and newjvgiveaways. There are of course, plenty more other sites.

14. Thank You Page

You should get a group of bloggers together and recommend subscribing in your Thank You page to their lists. Then, they certainly do the same for you.

15. Leverage other blogs

With this list building strategy, you should round-up a few bloggers. Then, each blogger will write an article to promote each other’s newsletter and freebies.

16. Create a Forum

Creating a forum is a great way to promote and brand yourself. You can also get quite a few new subscribers to your list. However, this list building tip is a bit time-consuming.

17. Sharing is caring

With this strategy, you need to create a squeeze page with your freebie or newsletter opt-in and ask your readers to share it with their team, online friends, and more.

18. Forwards

Why don’t you ask your subscribers to forward the email to another online marketer they know? I’m sure they might just do that, if they enjoy your awesome list building tips in their inboxes. Furthermore, it costs you nothing.
This tip might not get you direct subscribers per se, but can get you traffic that you can monetize later on.

19. Affiliates

I’m sure that people will promote you if there is something in it for them.
To get your free subscriber bonus, affiliates send visitors. The affiliate can get rewarded for delivering the lead when any sign-ups happen – That may be a free copy of a product or also a kind of special report that no one else gets access.

20. Password protect your posts

Although you can create a membership site, but that is not the one I talk about here. You can choose to set a password for some of your popular posts or for a part of a post as well. And of course, you need to let your readers know that they need to subscribe to your list in order to access the password protected content. Also, let them know that you will send them the password after they subscribe.
Besides, you also need to set up a special page displaying the password as soon as they subscribe.
There are some plugins that get the job done. You can find quite a few just by searching for “password protect” in your plugin directory.

List Building Tools For You

As for me, here are some of the useful tools for you:

1. Aweber email autoresponder

AWeber email autoresponder services make it easy for you to build an email list as well as stay in touch with prospects. It creates profitable customer relationships for your online business.

2. MaxBlogPress Subscribers Magnet

Let me place my opt-in forms strategically wherever I want to (about 8 different options), add with fills out the form automatically for my readers.
The email templates already has the name and email address. Just click the sign up button is what you have to do.
Anything else? No.

3. Hello Bar

Hello bar is the little stripe at the top inviting your visitors to subscribe to your newsletter. You can find and download this tool at hellobar.

4. MaxBlogPress Banner Ads

As for me, this tool is a better option than Hello Bar.
It is flexible. It can be displayed either at the top or bottom and show different messages. When you refresh a page, it can be “subscribe to my newsletter” or your affiliate products.
It’s free and can be found easily at MaxBlogPress

5. Seth Godin

Seth Godin is a free plugin. It allows you to display any message within a post.
It can be found in your plugin directory and is wildly used on many blogs.

6. Pop-Up Domination

Many bloggers are in love with it because of its effectiveness in placing pop-up all over their blogs. I find that this is quite annoying for readers.
PopUp Domination looks the same on every blog. In addition, it whacks me the second when I enter. I wonder whether the plugin does not have the option of when and how many times showing up per visitor, or bloggers do not care to set it up correctly.
And, I know most bloggers including me, all hate pop-ups. However, I have an article showing you the way to take advantage of using PopUp Domination.
All in all, I suggest two options of just doing a pop-up form through Aweber, or going for MaxBlogPress Subscribers Magnet. Each of the two is much less intrusive and also gives you a lot more options.
